Festivals Special Events & Courses 2006-2007

In addition to the courses and demonstrations listed below, there will be several brief "Taster Courses" which will be run during the various Festivals. The "Taster Courses" are free to all those who have paid entry to the Festivals. These "Tasters" are listed in date order.

The dates and cost of the Culinary demonstrations listed are as indicated.

Defra Announcement
The Brogdale Horticultural Trust is very disappointed to hear today that Defra has not chosen the Kent consortium to continue to look after the National Fruit Collections for the next five years.

January 2008
Planting Time
January is the best time of year to plant fruit trees. The Plant Centre at Mount Ephraim will be open from the 2nd of January 2008.

  To book any of the above courses please click here to download a booking form. The form should be completed and returned to Brogdale at least 7 days prior to the start of the course.
 

Notes:
Persons wishing to avail themselves of the "Basic Grafting Demonstration" service should consult Brogdale about their requirements at least two months before the date.
Please note the distinction between Courses and Demonstrations.

BEGINNERS PRUNING COURSE …. The course is largely practical and outside, protective clothing/suitable footwear is needed. You will need secateurs, pruning saw and note books. Summary handouts of the day will be issued. At least an hour will be spent indoors on pruning principles and tree forms. The course object is to enable you to prune with confidence and to understand basic principles. Maximum course number is 20, so early booking is advised.

INTERMEDIATE PRUNING COURSE …. Again protective clothing and suitable footwear, secateurs, pruning saw and notebook. A practical course involving pruning of centre leader and open centre trees. Involvement in the decision making of shaping and pruning trees and overcoming basic shaping problems. It includes the aspect of tree balance and preventing future difficulties in tree form, and discussion about shaping mature orchard trees. If you have problem trees at home please bring photographs taken in winter showing the tree structure, preferably with the light behind. Maximum course number is 12 so please book early to avoid disappointment. Booking forms are attached and should be forwarded to Brogdale as soon as possible with your cheque made out to Brogdale Orchards Ltd.

Closing date for all courses is 7 days prior to the course and bookings will not be accepted after that date.

   
 

Please note: Where events run through the week the Craft Stalls, Tractor Trailer Rides and the Faversham Miniature Railway will only be available on the weekends.
